As soon as class is over, I run blindly back to the dorm by myself, practically tripping over my flipflops. What a dork and a fool I am! I’m so glad I never told Aesha and Kelly about my crush on Connor! And that Alpaca Eyes nickname – OMG I’m so mortified! How stupid!

Now it all fits together – the time he came over to introduce himself, the times he sat with all of us. What an idiot I’ve been! He liked Aesha all along.

I throw Mustang Sally on the floor, crawl under my comforter, and pull it all the way over my head. Kelly never even comes back to our room --I guess she goes to Aesha’s room and then straight to dinner. I don’t even go to dinner. Everything is just too awkward and stressful. I mean, I hurt Kelly’s feelings. And I hurt Ned’s feelings, too! And I made a fool of myself over Connor, just like Kelly and I had sworn not to do. Maybe I’ll just lie here in the bed and starve to death and no one will even think to look for me.

Eventually I remember that Mom sent some food supplies so I’m lying here alone eating peanut butter crackers under the covers when Marisa texts me.

So, are you coming? We’re at dinner and planning to stunt on the quad right afterward with Trey! Hurry up!

Well, why not? To be honest, I’d planned on chickening out. I’ve never been a person who broke the rules. But what do I have to lose? Everyone at MedCamp is at dinner so no one would know. And everything at MedCamp is just so messed up and no one wants to hang out with me anyway. I could use some cheer!

I pull my hair up in a ponytail, put on my shorts and tie my cheer shoes with trembling hands.

And before I can talk myself out of it, I race down the stairs and out the side door of the dorm. The door bangs shut behind me.
